At Providence, we recognize the critical role Perfusionists play in saving lives during complex cardiac and thoracic surgeries. As a Cardiac Perfusionist, you’ll have the unique responsibility of operating advanced heart-lung machines to maintain blood circulation and oxygenation when patients need it most. Your expertise ensures stability during life-saving procedures and contributes directly to successful outcomes.

We're proud to be the provincial heart center, offering advanced cardiac care and innovative treatments that save lives every day. As British Columbia's leading tertiary and only quaternary cardiac program, our team is renowned for its expertise in performing complex surgeries, providing cutting-edge treatments, and pioneering innovative cardiac procedures

Our team supports over 1,100 cardiac surgeries annually, including 25 heart transplants last year,  and is known for pioneering innovations in cardiac care, including:

  • Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)
  • VA ECMO
  • Adult Congenital Heart Surgery

Whether you’re supporting intricate open-heart surgeries or collaborating on innovative cardiac care, your skills will be essential to every patient’s healing journey.

“Perfusionists are very intertwined and connected to the technology they use”

Luke Harris, a Perfusionist at Providence Health Care, noticed that the cannulas—tubes connecting blood vessels to the machine and then back to the body—were sometimes impeding blood flow to patients’ legs, potentially causing severe complications. To address this issue, Harris and his partners co-founded Total Flow Medical to develop a cannula that prevents these blockages.
