St. Vincent's Heather: Dementia Village

St. Vincent’s Heather will redefine the way we care for seniors with compassion and community.

A new era in seniors' care

At St. Vincent's Heather, we're reimagining seniors' care. We aim to prioritize seniors' well-being, dignity and culture. We use a social-relational model of care that centers on residents and their families. This model highlights the importance of social connections and relationships in providing care.

St. Vincent's Heather will be a 13-storey, 240-bed long-term care home. It will be built on the former site of St. Vincent's Hospital, which served the Vancouver community for 65 years. St. Vincent's Heather will offer vital long-term care for seniors. We will provide wraparound services that reflect our residents' personal needs and preferences. Our services will support residents' happiness and well-being in a home that meets their needs.

The home will include 20 households, each designed for 12 residents. Each resident will have a single-bed room with a wheelchair-accessible ensuite (private bathroom). The home will have social and recreational (activity) spaces found in a typical home. These spaces include a living room, dining room and activity space. Some suites will have connecting doors to let couples and families stay together.

The home will have community spaces on the main floor. These spaces will allow residents, families, visitors and staff to access recreational, social and health services. These services include:

  • Primary care services
  • Community garden
  • 37-space childcare centre
  • Catholic Chapel
  • Sacred space for worship, reflection and spiritual practice including Indigenous ceremonial practices
  • Community hall
  • Library
  • Theatre
  • Café
  • Grocery store
  • Creative and exercise/therapy space
  • Hairdressing services

St. Vincent's Heather will be more than a care home. It will be a lively and active community where seniors can enjoy their lives. Family and friends can be present to share all the special moments. We want to provide the best care and help residents live life the way they want to.

Providence Health Care is contributing the land to build the home in partnership with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver. Providence Living, a non-profit society that Providence created in 2017, will operate the site after it opens. St. Vincent's Heather is expected to be completed in fall 2028.
