Providence Living at the Views

A new state-of-the-art care environment for long-term care residents in Comox, BC.

Overview

The new Providence Living at The Views long-term care home is set to open in July 2024 on a 14-acre site in Comox, BC. It will replace the current, outdated home on the former St. Joseph’s Hospital site in Comox.

The new home will provide a 156-bed state-of-the-art care environment for long-term care residents. The home will also provide a modern, improved work environment for doctors, staff and volunteers. The new home will have 156 private bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms organized into 13 intimate households of 12 residents.

The site boasts a central courtyard that is nearly an acre, complete with a multi-denominational Chapel, a first-of-its-kind Indigenous Big House, a playground, gardens, gazebos and a patio.

Families and loved ones can enjoy a variety of amenities in the courtyard. They will be able to:

  • Enjoy food and drinks in the licensed bistro.
  • Get their hair done at the salon.
  • Shop for essentials at the convenience store.
  • Work out in the wellness centre.
  • Enjoy movie nights in the community hall.

The courtyard also has a medical office for doctor or dental appointments.

Home for Us

Providence Living at the Views will implement a new model of care that is built on worldwide best practices and, in particular, the village approach to care pioneered in the Netherlands by the De Hogewyk group. Providence Living’s version of the Dutch model is a social-relational model of care known as Home for Us. This will replace the traditional task-driven institutional model of care typically seen in traditional long-term care environments.

Home for Us guides the care our residents will receive and is based on the following three principles:

  1. Emotional connections matter most.
  2. Residents direct each moment.
  3. Home is not a place. It’s a feeling.

The Home for Us care model is woven into all residents' services and daily activities. It gives the care community a sense of family and home. Home for Us helps residents focus on fully living their lives instead of focusing on health-related challenges. Care providers can use the Home for Us model to build daily routines around the skills, abilities, and interests residents have retained rather than those they may have lost.

Home for Us strives to create communities of joy, purpose, meaning and belonging for all. The most significant way we can accomplish this is to create a home-like feel in our long-term care homes. Home for Us lets residents have autonomy and choice in their day, and creates emotional connections among residents, their families, and the staff.
