About this clinic

Physiatry is also known as Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Physiatrists treat a range of medical conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

The Physiatry Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital treats the following:

• Neurological conditions such as:
  • Strokes and other acquired brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Congenital conditions such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida
  • Peripheral nerve injuries
• Musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions such as:
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand disorders
  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot disorders
  • Spinal disorders
• Circulatory disorders such as:
  • Lymphedema, which is a swelling from the build-up of lymph fluid in the body
  • Chronic neurological or musculoskeletal pain
  • Spasticity/dystonia conditions with Botox treatments
  • Diabetic and other high-risk foot disorders
• Urgent Referrals (Rapid Access Physiatry Consults)

You need a referral to come to this clinic. Its staff will arrange your appointment time.

Advances in physiatry treatments are all thanks to medical research. While participating in research is a decision you should make for yourself in consultation with your care team, there is much activity in this area so please ask us about our research programs if you’re interested.

By taking part in research, you can help us all learn more about phsyiatry and find better ways to help people like you live and thrive with the condition. While you cannot assume benefit to yourself, your participation can make a difference in improving care for future patients.
