Providence Health Care provides emergency services for Vancouver’s downtown city centre and East Vancouver residents at our two acute care hospitals.

Emergency Services

Emergency Department staff and physicians at both St. Paul’s Hospital and Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (MSJ) are skilled in providing care of the highest standards, and are committed to treating all patients as quickly and effectively as possible. Services are prioritized based on the severity of a patient’s condition upon arrival. In addition to emergency, orthopedic , and trauma care, Providence emergency care sites offer specialized services.

St. Paul’s Hospital

St. Paul’s Emergency Department is one of the busiest in BC, offering care 24- hours- a- day to the residents of Vancouver’s diverse downtown neighbourhoods, as well as workers in the downtown core and out of town visitors. St. Paul’s Emergency Department specializes in complex and multiple diagnosis, surgery, internal medicine and speciality medicine. This includes neurology and stroke management, gastroenterology, respiratory, renal, obstetrical, urological, ophthalmological, head and neck, plastic surgery, mental health and cardiovascular care.

The department is staffed by 20 specialty emergency physicians trained to deal with the full spectrum of medical emergencies and to treat patients of all ages, including children. The department has a Domestic Violence Response Program for patients who may have been involved in domestic violence, elder abuse or child abuse. Mount Saint Joseph Hospital

MSJ operates a community hospital Emergency Department open from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily. The department sees almost 23,000 patients a year, and offers full primary and secondary Emergency services to Vancouver’s East Side residents, as well as providing specific multicultural services. MSJ sees patients with medical, surgical, and orthopedic problems. Children are also seen at this site, although there is no children’s inpatient unit. Teaching and Research

St. Paul’s is a training ground for emergency physicians, nurses, and allied care staff under the direction of senior instructors/preceptors. Our resident training program is a partnership with the Family Practice program at the University of British Columbia. The department is also known as one of Canada’s leading academic emergency departments, with a strong research program. Research includes pre-hospital care and stroke management, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of heart disorders.
