Study Finds Type 2 Diabetes on the Rise in BC Young People (Dr. Nadia Khan, St. Paul's Hospital)
New research has found that the number of young people with Type 2 diabetes in British Columbia has drastically increased, surpassing those with Type 1 diabetes.
The study was conducted by researchers at Providence Health Care and was released to the public on Wednesday.
“Although this study did not look at causes of diabetes in the young, the rising rates of obesity, high calorie, high-sugar content diets, and increased sedentariness are likely the root causes of this surge in Type 2 diabetes in those under 30,” said senior author Dr. Nadia Khan, a researcher with the Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences at PHC and an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Medicine.
