Diversity & inclusion at work

The value of a diverse and inclusive workforce at Providence.

Bring your authentic self to work

Providence Health Care (PHC) actively cultivates an environment that celebrates you and your diversity.

How we cultivate an inclusive environment

From language, culture and identity, to ability and lived experience, we embrace the diversity of the people who work here. This helps us deliver more comprehensive, culturally sensitive care to patients and residents.

We want all job candidates to know that our recruitment policy sets out these objectives:

  • Ensure a fair, transparent and consistent approach for the recruitment process and alignment with equity, diversity and inclusion best practices;
  • Align with Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) policy;
  • Be guided by PHC values of respect and dignity for each person, and conduct recruitment in a non-discriminatory manner.

This policy also stipulates:

  • Interview questions must be written to ensure they do not directly or indirectly discriminate against Equity Deserving Groups, and must directly relate to the job description and candidate profile and include culturally safe questions and best answers.
  • “Equity Deserving Groups” are communities that experience significant collective barriers in participating in society. This could include attitudinal, historic, social and environmental barriers based on age, ethnicity, disability, economic status, gender, nationality, race, sexual orientation and transgender status, etc.

Active outreach

Providence is proud to be an active participant in the diverse communities we serve. Employees at PHC work with the community to understand and address the specific health care issues of different populations. This helps us try to meet the needs of our diverse workforce as well as the needs of our patients and residents.

So you’ll see us at Christmas events, Lunar New Year celebrations, Diwali, and many other holiday events. You’ll also see our staff and volunteers at initiatives like Providence in the Park and other community events, from festivals to fundraisers to fun runs.

Learning & growing together

We recognize that diversity and inclusion are ongoing journeys in society and also here at Providence. But we are committed to continuous learning and growth. Our organization provides training and resources to deepen understanding of cultural competency, unconscious biases, and the importance of equitable care delivery. Through education and awareness, we strive to build a more inclusive health care environment.
