During your visit

A respiratory therapist (RT) will introduce themselves and any support staff who will be helping out with your procedure.

The RT will review your medical history. They will explain the equipment they will be using and answer any questions you may have. Pulmonary function tests generally require you to perform a variety of breathing maneuvers.

Appointments are typically 30-90 minutes long.

Please do:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment
  • Wear loose clothing and comfortable footwear such as sneakers or running shoes
  • Bring your BC Services Card or other government-issued photo ID
  • Bring a list of all your breathing medications
  • Continue to take all your non-respiratory medications that have been prescribed by your doctor

Please do not:

  • Wear perfume, aftershave, or other scented products
  • Do any physical exercise immediately before
  • Smoke within one hour of your test
  • Eat a large meal within two hours of your test
  • Consume any alcohol within four hours of your test

Use your inhalers unless you start to have significant respiratory symptoms
