Edmonton’s Angel Cradle sites unused during first year since joining St. Paul's Hospital as the only sites offering this program in Canada

Alberta’s only two “Angel Cradle” sites for safely dropping off unwanted newborns sat unused during their first year of operation, but the facilities will remain open for the long term, Covenant Health says.

“We always said right from the beginning that if it is never used, that’s fine,” said Gordon Self, vice-president of ethics for Covenant, which installed the private drop-offs at the Misericordia and Grey Nuns hospitals last May.

“What we’re trying to do is provide an additional option for people. Even if it’s only used once, then it’s been worth it.”
