On September 20, 2022 the IFHE 2022 Global Healthcare Energy Award was presented to Providence Health Care, St. Vincent’s: Brock Fahrni for achieving the largest health care facility energy reduction in Canada!
In 2020, under the direction of Tony Munster, Executive Director, Projects, Planning & Facilities Management, a decision was made to implement a cooling system at St. Vincent’s: Brock Fahrni.
The goal of this new system? To improve resident comfort and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at PHC.
In 2021 a Heat Recovery Chiller system, designed by Impact Engineering, Integral Group and heating/cooling company Thermenex, was put into place. This innovative system extracts waste heat from the facility that would otherwise be lost to atmosphere, and uses it to heat the building and produce domestic hot water.
The result? Against the baseline year of 2020, we are on track to meet or exceed an 80 per cent reduction in GHG emissions!
Coincidentally, also in 2020 the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE) with support from the Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP) and Mazzetti, launched a new program, their first ever Global Healthcare Energy Awards. These are designed to recognize health care facilities for their efforts in reducing energy usage, and encourage a commitment to lessening the carbon footprint of global health care.
