COVID-19 outbreak at St. Paul’s Hospital NICU over

Vancouver, July 29, 2020 – Vancouver Coastal Health has declared the COVID-19 outbreak over at St. Paul’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), effective July 28, 2020.

A VCH Medical Health Officer led the response, working closely with St. Paul’s and Providence Health Care.  A number of actions were taken during the outbreak at St. Paul’s NICU, which was declared on July 16, 2020. This included prompt isolation of cases and all potential contacts, stringent disinfecting of the NICU, and monitoring of proper infection, prevention and control practices. At no time was there evidence of risk to patients elsewhere in the hospital.

The main NICU is now fully open again. The maternity unit was not part of the outbreak and remained open.

The new protocols requiring parents visiting their babies in the NICU to wear a mask and sign a visitor log remain in place.

We continue to ask our staff, patients and families to remain vigilant and immediately self-isolate and report any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection.

We thank our families for their patience and kindness through this time. The health and safety of patients and health care providers remain our utmost priority and we will continue to work every day to ensure patients receive the care they need.
