B.C.'s closer to having two publicly-funded villages for people with dementia (PHC)

Two publicly-funded villages for people with dementia, based on a model that’s already working well in the Netherlands, are coming to B.C.

Providence Health Care’s Jo-Ann Tait says the model has been giving good results in Europe.

“De Hogeweyk, the village in the Netherlands, supports seniors in a very different way looking at the smaller household design with the freedom of movement, access to the outdoors and integrating the community outside of the walls of a dementia village into the walls of the care home,” she adds.

With the number of Canadians living with dementia expected to nearly double over the next 15 years, she says it’s important to look ahead.
