Business in Vancouver Recognizes Two Providence Health Care Medical Staff

VANCOUVER, DECEMBER 14, 2012 – Business in Vancouver (BIV) has named two Providence Health Care (PHC) medical staff among its 2012 “Forty under 40” winners.

Each year, BIV highlights the achievements of BC's outstanding entrepreneurs, executives, managers and professionals in public or private business and non-profit sectors under the age of 40.  The magazine recognized Drs. Carl Brown and Evan Wood this year.

“The passion and excellence these two doctors exhibit improves the lives of patients in British Columbia while strengthening our organization’s capacity for innovation and new knowledge,” said Dianne Doyle, President and CEO of Providence Health Care.  “Excellence at every level of our organization is something we strive to achieve, something eminently more possible thanks to these two individuals.”

BIV recognized Dr. Brown, President of the PHC Medical Staff and Head, Division of General Surgery, for his accomplishments in colorectal cancer surgery and leadership amongst the PHC medical staff association.  Among Dr. Brown’s many achievements are innovations which have reduced the invasiveness of life-saving procedures, shortening recovery times.

“Team successes often manifest in individual awards,” said Dr. Carl Brown.  “This honour is recognition of the hard work by Drs. Manoj Raval and Terry Phang, our colorectal surgery clinical and research team, and the other leaders at PHC who support young clinicians in pursuing excellence.”

Meanwhile, BIV recognized Dr. Wood for his leadership as co-Director of the Urban Health Research Initiative at PHC and Canada Research Chair in Inner City Medicine at UBC.  Dr. Wood’s research focus has been on responding to untreated alcohol and drug addiction, and he recently secured a $3 million donation from Vancouver-based mining company Goldcorp that will be used to create a new addiction medicine fellowship training program at St. Paul’s Hospital.

“I'm honoured by this recognition and pleased that, given how untreated alcohol and drug addiction are often not openly discussed in our society, that BIV has helped shine some light on an area where there are some really exciting advancements emerging.”

The winners comprise the top 40, and are recognized as the “Forty Under 40”.  Winners are chosen based on such values as achievement, experience and innovation, vision, leadership, and community involvement.  This is the second year in a row that BIV has recognized someone from Providence Health Care.  Last year the award went to PHC’s Jennifer Duff, Program Director of Mental Health at St. Paul’s Hospital.

Providence Health Care (PHC) is one of Canada's largest faith-based health care organizations, operating 16 health care facilities in Greater Vancouver. PHC operates one of two adult academic health science centres in the province, performs cutting-edge research in more than 30 clinical specialties, and focuses its services on six “populations of emphasis”: cardio-pulmonary risks and illnesses, HIV/AIDS, mental health, renal risks and illness, specialized needs in aging and urban health and is home to the B.C. Centre
for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
