Providence Health Care is looking for a Biomedical Engineer! Providence Health Care is the Lead Health Authority for the Lower Mainland Biomedical Department. Preferred candidates will have a Master’s degree in Engineering or Applied science with an Electrical and Biomedical Engineering focus in Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, 10 years of experience including exposure to Biomedical Engineering in a hospital environment, experience with interpreting the Canadian Electrical Code, sound knowledge of CSA standards & Health Canada regulation, and registration as a Professional Engineer. SummaryReporting to the Regional Engineering Team Manager, the Engineer assists in the management and direction for a designated portfolio within the lower mainland Biomedical Engineering Department such as (a) Risk Management (a) Equipment Planning, (b) Information Technology, (c) Projects & Systems, (d) Research & Development/Education or (e) Safety across Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Services Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health (collectively, the “Organizations”). The position assumes a leadership and accountability role for capital acquisition planning, risk management, patient safety and quality improvement, major projects, strategic planning, resource planning and utilization. The Engineer partners with biomedical engineering staff, clinical leaders, medical leaders, capital acquisitions, foundations, external regulatory and standards agencies, medical technology vendors and manufacturers and other key leaders and staff across the Organizations. The Engineer also works with other Biomedical Engineering departments in BC outside of the Lower Mainland on shared initiatives to advance the delivery of biomedical engineering services. The Engineer also coordinates and supervises the work of Biomedical Engineering staff as it relates to various projects.
- Assists the Regional Engineering Team Manager, in the management and direction of the department and the delivery of its services including assisting in defining the resource needs and service delivery models. Responsible for operational budget and budget decisions in the absence of the Leader, Biomedical Engineering.
- Coordinates and supervises the work of Biomedical Engineering staff as it relates to various projects. Provides specific direction to all staff on issues such as Quality Improvement, Incident Investigation, Patient Safety, Device Hazard and Alert assessment and Capital Planning, etc.
- Participates in the interview, selection and training of new employees. Assists in defining and implementing performance evaluations.
- Coordinates and manages the planning and implementation of major project activities intended to support the clinical customers, by assessing needs and priorities, defining objectives and outcomes, and implementing strategies for success.
- Assists the Regional Engineering Team Manager with strategic planning. Also assists the clinical services and the Organizations with strategic planning as it relates to medical technology.
- Participates in the capital planning processes for the Organizations. As such, takes an active and significant role, sometimes including coordination, in the assessment of needs and priorities, the development of specifications, and the evaluation, selection, and implementation of technologies. Also actively participates in the ongoing and annual medical technology planning for the Organizations. Liaises with vendors and manufacturers.
- Regularly monitors new medical technologies and technology trends related to health care, and makes recommendations to the Organizations and the clinical services.
- Coordinates risk management activities for the department by establishing and reviewing risk management protocols such as incident investigations, hazard and recall monitoring, etc., and ensures that appropriate actions are implemented.
- Regularly monitors regulatory and standards organizations such as Health Canada, ECRI, CSA, etc. and ensures that this information is incorporated into the Organizations’ risk management and patient safety strategies.
- Participates in the development and review of hospital protocols that deal with the safe use, management, and support of medical technology.
- Participates in Regional and Provincial Biomedical Engineering initiatives such as standardized protocols, common performance indicators, etc.
- Coordinates quality improvement activities for the department and related areas with respect to medical devices and use. Ensures that standards of performance are defined and adhered to.
- In emergencies, or when resources/expertise is otherwise unavailable, maintains and repairs a limited selection of specialized medical technologies for defined durations. Acts as, or represents, the Leader of Biomedical Engineering for defined durations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Engineering or Applied Science with a focus in Biomedical Engineering. Five (5) years’ recent engineering/technical experience including experience in Biomedical Engineering in a hospital environment.
Current registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
