Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Relations & Community Engagement, and working in a collaborative team environment, the Coordinator, Indigenous Wellness Community Engagement provides leadership within Providence Health Care (PHC) to enhance, promote, and engage Indigenous community participation in the planning and development for the New St. Paul’s Hospital (NSPH) and other relevant planning and policy development processes. Facilitates partnerships and relationship-building with Indigenous communities and individuals to support the Indigenous Wellness Engagement Strategy for the NSPH and PHC. The Coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing, evaluating and reporting out on PHC/NSPH community engagement activities with Indigenous peoples and communities, including current or former patients of PHC/SPH.

The Coordinator works with PHC and NSPH leadership, program and clinical leaders, Indigenous Health Team members, and others in developing the appropriate consultation approaches required and developing Indigenous wellness community engagement strategies. Other key interactions include health authorities including First Nations Health Authority, Vancouver Coastal Health, and Provincial Health Services Authority, Indigenous organizations, first nations, band councils and administration, and community organizations, as well as patients/family members, and members of the public.


Demonstrated creativity and initiative in designing, leading and evaluating community engagement projects and developing new strategic partnerships both internal and external to the organization. Knowledge and experience in methodologies, planning, delivery, evaluation and reporting out on community engagement, public participation, and stakeholder consultation processes.
Knowledge of complex organizational and system dynamics in terms of involving multiple stakeholders.
Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous health and wellness issues; socioeconomic determinants of health and wellness; participatory community based engagement from a traditional context; traditional protocols; Indigenous community organizations and services; and, research literature and trends on Indigenous health, wellness, cultural safety, and reconciliation.
Knowledge and understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and the PHC’s signatory to the Declaration of Cultural Safety and Humility.
High level communication, negotiation and facilitation skills, including understanding of social media in citizen engagement. Strong writing skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and cooperatively with groups, individuals and organizations. Builds credibility, understanding and trust in the external community to assist PHC to meet its strategic directions.
Knowledge of participatory community-based research, planning and analysis skills, and ability to synthesize information from a vast range of sources into practical plans and useful recommendations.
Demonstrated ability to build cooperative and consultative partnerships with senior staff and leaders in external organizations. Knowledge of PHC strategic priorities and key unresolved issues in order to identify partnership and engagement opportunities.
Demonstrated ability to independently determine appropriate levels of engagement with internal and external stakeholders while ensuring senior staff are informed.
Demonstrated project management skills.
Demonstrated computer literacy and word-processing skills.


Bachelor’s degree in related field (Master’s Degree preferred), supplemented by three years of recent related experience in Indigenous community engagement and organizational development, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in the Indigenous community engagement/development sector. 
Valid BC Driver’s License. Personal vehicle required as travel within the geographic area may be required.


Develops a comprehensive Indigenous community engagement plan that integrates with the PHC/NSPH planning and organizational priorities, including themes relating to: First Nations’ community/governance relationships with PHC/NSPH Redevelopment team; health services delivery; experience of care; Indigenous-specific elements of the NSPH (e.g., All Nations Sacred Space); and a proposed Indigenous health and wellness centre at the NSPH.
Develops partnerships that benefit PHC/NSPH and local communities in achieving the organization’s strategic goals and objectives and seeks stakeholder input to allow for informed planning and decision-making within the organization. Assesses, monitors and reports on trends in community participation in engagement activities.
Increases PHC/NSPH organizational capacity to engage with Indigenous communities and stakeholders. Representation of PHC/NSPH to communities, health care organizations, local governments and related stakeholders and partners.
Organizes and facilitates meetings attended by PHC/NSPH representatives and Indigenous community members, organizations, individuals and patients/family. Encourages and supports participation by PHC/NSPH in processes and structures. Ensures appropriate and culturally safe processes, and engaged and effective two-way communication.
Ensures educational programs are in place for PHC/NSPH staff related to strategies for public consultation and community partnerships, as well as strategies to effectively promote community involvement in decision-making.
Prepares reports, briefs, option papers and frameworks by formulating, researching, and analyzing community engagement issues.
Works closely with the Corporate Director, Mission Engagement & Reconciliation to identify systems and policy issues and opportunities relating to community engagement, in support of Indigenous health and wellness and reconciliation, and to support the planning and development of the New St. Paul’s.
Determines the implications of emerging Indigenous community health and wellness systems issues and service delivery trends for programs and services by consulting with community stakeholders, patients/families, program managers, staff and physicians, planning task groups, committees and others.
Maintains own knowledge and understanding of current Indigenous health, wellness, reconciliation, cultural safety, and health care systems issues, policy, legislation, trends, and research by reading related industry journals and literature, sustaining relationships with partners, and by participating on various committees, teams, etc.
Develops performance goals and objectives consistent with the organization’s mission, vision, values and commitment to Indigenous Wellness and Reconciliation.
Performs other related duties as required.
