Employer-Paid Specialty Nursing Training Opportunities
Empowering nurses supports better patient care. As the needs of those we serve increases in complexity, so does the need for specialized expertise in our nursing staff.
Honouring those needs and our commitments to the professional development of our staff, PHC’s employer-paid Specialty Nursing Program funds nurses to advance their knowledge, skills and expertise in areas such as Emergency, Maternity, Perioperative, Critical Care, Hemodialysis and High Acuity.
Providence Health Care will pay your tuition, books and salary, while you learn. Upon successful completion, you will be hired into an existing vacancy in the area of study and will be required to commit to a minimum of one year in the department.
The following programs are offered in conjunction with the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s (BCIT) Specialty Nursing department:
- Critical Care (ICU/CCU/Cath Lab/CSICU/PAR)
- Hemodialysis (Nephrology)
- High Acuity
- Maternity (Neonatal/Perinatal)

Employer-Paid Perioperative Nursing Program
Registered Nurses who want to specialize in perioperative nursing can join a long history of education in the OR at St. Paul’s. PHC’s employer-funded Perioperative Program includes online learning, simulation strategy and clinical preceptorship with a strong emphasis on the clinical portion.
Providence will cover the cost of tuition, books and salary while you complete the program. Nurses who have one to two years of acute care experience are preferred, but the program also accepts new grads who have done preceptorships with us in the OR and who display a keen interest in Perioperative nursing.
All surgical specialties are covered such as general surgery, gynecology, plastics, urology, vascular and thoracic, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and ear nose and throat.
The Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) has approved this program. Upon successful completion of the Program, graduates are awarded a Diploma in Perioperative Nursing and receive credits toward a baccalaureate degree.

PHC Employed Student Nurse Program 2021
About the Program
Providence Health Care's Employed Student Nurse (ESN/ESPN) program provides an opportunity for RN and RPN students to continue their professional development and become part of a committed interdisciplinary team. This paid employment experience allows students to consolidate the knowledge and skills learned in school while gaining increased exposure to the clinical setting. Although the focus is on consolidation, as an ESN/ESPN you will also learn through hands on experience.
ESN/ESPN's are considered supernumerary when working on the unit and are hired as casual employees. This allows for flexibility when scheduling shifts around school schedules. You can also apply your earned seniority towards your first job with us! Numerous positions are available at Mount St. Joseph Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital in many exciting areas. These areas include Acute Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Cardiac, Renal, Critical Care, Maternity and our Long Term Care sites.
In addition to the clinical area supports, a dedicated ESN/ESPN educator provides orientation and mentorship during your ESN/ESPN experience and continues to provide support to you as a New Graduate with Providence Health Care. Job readiness will be enhanced through your ESN/ESPN experience, easing the transition from student to qualified nurse.
How Do I Qualify?
You must be able to answer yes to each of the following four statements:
I will have successfully completed the equivalent of year 2 in a recognized nursing education program by April 2022.
I will have completed a clinical placement in Acute Medicine or Surgery before my start date: January, February, March, April and May 2022.
I am eligible for student membership with CRNBC/CRPNBC.
I have Current CPR Certification.

How to get your career started
COVID-19 has increased the need for Health Care Assistants in long-term care and assisted living services.
Through the Health Career Access Program, the Province will pay for your post-secondary education.
New hires in the program start in a Health Care Support Worker position and receive paid training that leads to full qualification as a Health Care Assistant.
Please note: All successful program applicants must start as a Health Care Support Worker before advancing to a Health Care Assistant position.
Health Care Support Worker
Health Care Support Workers are supervised by Registered Nurses or other regulated health care professionals. They provide a variety of critical non-clinical, non-direct care supports to patients and residents.
- Participating as an integral member of a healthcare delivery team
- Establishing a caring relationship with clients, residents and families
- Providing support and assistance with mealtime activities
- Providing support and assistance in carrying out activities
- Performing housekeeping duties
- Greeting and directing visitors
- Restocking supplies
- Completing and maintaining relevant records
Health Care Support Workers earn $20.95 an hour.
Health Care Assistant
Health Care Assistants are members of the health care team who provide personal care in a variety of health care settings including acute care hospitals, assisted living facilities, group homes, residential care and community care.
They are supervised by Registered Nurses or other regulated health care professionals and follow established care plans to provide personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing, assisting with meals and oral hygiene.
- Helping in the delivery of nursing care, including taking temperature, pulse and respiration readings
- Documenting information on a patient’s chart
- Responding to call bells/alarms in hospital settings
- Observing and monitoring patient progress, symptoms and behavioural changes and reporting significant observations
- Utilizing mechanical aides (specialty beds, lifts, wheelchairs and stretchers) to transport patients
- Providing assistance with positioning, lifting and/or transferring patients using established lifting/safety techniques
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients and staff
On average, Health Care Assistants earn an annual provincial salary of $45,091.

Stage 1: Start as a Health Care Support Worker
Stage 2: Complete basic training and onboarding
All newly hired health care support workers must complete a provincially standardized training and onboarding program. This is provided by your employer.
You will be paid for your time and any course fees will be covered.
Stage 3: Become a Health Care Assistant
After you complete basic training and pass a probationary work period, you enter a structured education program to become a Health Care Assistant that you complete while you are working.
The program is delivered as a partnership between your employer and an established post-secondary institution
It will take about a year complete and is provided to you at no cost
Health Care Support Workers will be paid $785 a week while attending class or participating in clinical training as part of the education program.
It is mandatory that participants successfully complete the Health Care Assistant training program.
Employees who do not undertake the Health Care Assistant training are not eligible to work as a Health Care Support Workers and have their salary paid by the Province.
On completion of the program, you earn a recognized post-secondary credential and are eligible to register as a Health Care Assistant.
Health Care Assistants can work across B.C. in long-term care and assisted living facilities, provide community home support and contribute to care that is delivered in acute care hospital settings.

PHC New Graduate (NG) Program
Interested in joining the New Grad Program at PHC? Here is some information on how to become involved, what the program offers and who you can contact for more information.
How Do I Join The New Grad Program?
Once you have gained employment with PHC you will automatically be part of the program. You do not need to apply to the New Grad Program in order to join. Whether you are an RN, LPN or RPN hired in either a casual, part time or full time position you are part of the program.
Once you are hired, your operations leader/manager will schedule you for New Graduate Nurse orientation where you can meet the educators of the program and find out more. You are officially part of the program for one year but the educators are usually always around!
What Does The New Grad Program Offer?
The program is made up of three different components: Added Support, Education and Consultation.
It is becoming widely known that the transition from a student nurse to a fully qualified nurse can be difficult at times. The New Graduate Program at PHC provides a new graduate specific orientation in order to familiarize you with the program and helps to prepare you to start your new career.
Orientation consists of two weeks classroom education, unit specific orientation and guided bedside shifts. The number of guided bedside shifts depends on the unit you will be working on and your previous work experience. The new graduate educators will work with you to ensure you have enough support.
On the unit you will see the New Grad Educators as they check-in with you, see how your day is going and if any clinical help with problem solving is needed. In addition, you will have the support of your Operations Leaders, unit Educators, Clinical Resources Nurses (Mentors), Clinical Nurse Leaders and your colleagues.
The Program provides four educational workshops. These workshops are engaging, interactive and relevant to new graduate learning needs. Topics covered include, interpreting lab results, responding to emergencies, diagnostic tests & procedures and providing care at the end of life.
3 Month Seminar
The first three months can sometimes be the most difficult. Extra support and education is provided at this time and brings new graduates together to talk and share their experiences.
One to One Support
If you require specific education, the educators can meet with you individually, discuss your learning needs and provide extra education, skills lab practice and other resources.
