About this clinic

Through group work or individual sessions, the clinic provides support with:

  • Caregiver skill-building
  • Education
  • Strengthening of self-care strategies

Our team includes a social worker, occupational therapist and geriatric psychiatrists. We work within the Older Adult Outpatient Clinic. The clinic supports the caregiver alongside supporting the care of the person with dementia. Current groups include CARERS (problem solving technique and communication simulation using a simulated patient/actor) and Mindfulness-Based Dementia Care (MBDC).

We aim to improve the health and well-being of both the caregiver and the person with dementia. This is done through developing caregiver confidence and ability.

Clinical trials & research

Advances in treatments are all thanks to medical research. While participating in research is a decision you should make for yourself in consultation with your care team, there is much activity in this area so please ask us about our research programs if you’re interested.

By taking part in research, you can help us all learn more about advancing health outcomes and find better ways to help people live and thrive. While you cannot assume benefit to yourself, your participation can make a difference in improving care for future patients.

The following clinical trials are currently enrolling volunteers. Please ask your care team for more information or contact the research team listed on each study or trial. For other information about research at Providence Health Care, please visit Providence Research.

Medical & professional referrals

Family physicians can refer eligible caregivers who live in the Vancouver area using the referral form below.

Eligible caregivers are those who are at a moderate-high risk for caregiver distress. This means they may be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. Caregivers can be partners, family members and friends. They are providing regular support and care to people with dementia.

Fill in Part 1 and the Screening Questionnaire on the second page. Take the form to your doctor to fill in Part 2 and send the form to our clinic.

We will reach out to arrange an intake appointment with our team. You may meet with a social worker, an occupational therapist, or a geriatric psychiatrist.
