Overview
Providence Health Care's mission has always been about being of the most services to the most people in need of help. That means we are always stepping up to take on challenges including building the largest new hospital in the history of the province as well as re-thinking assisted living and long-term care from the ground up.
The new St. Paul's Hospital
You may have heard that we're building a new hospital. The vision for the new hospital and health campus — to be located in Vancouver’s False Creek Flats area on Station Street — is to lead in the delivery of BC’s new model for health care by providing our patients with the highest quality, integrated, innovative and patient-centred care.
For Providence clinicians, researchers and employees, it means being part of the most advanced, best equipped, and most expertly staffed hospital in the country. The campus will also include an innovation and research complex just steps away and connected to the new St. Paul’s Hospital. This innovation area will be home to a full spectrum of facilities, from core research spaces including wet labs, specimen biobanks, a daycare, and more. Construction is well underway and the new hospital is expected to open in 2027.
The site is near many transportation hubs and will also include multiple amenities for patients and families as well as Providence employees.
St. Vincent’s: Heather long-term care home project
The St. Vincent’s: Heather long-term care home will be built on the former site of St. Vincent’s Hospital. It will be a 13-storey, 240-bed long-term care home that will include 20 “households” accommodating 12 residents, each in single-bed rooms and will include the social and recreational spaces found in a typical home, such as a living room, dining room and activity spaces. Some units will also have connecting doors to allow couples and families to remain together. Each bedroom will have a wheelchair-accessible ensuite bathroom.
The new site is near the geographical centre of Vancouver. The new facility will be located at the northwest corner of the intersection of West 33rd Avenue and Heather Street. This site is also immediately south of the BC Children’s Hospital campus, and west of Queen Elizabeth Park.
Construction is expected to begin in fall 2025 and completion is expected in fall 2028.
