Caregivers experience high stress levels
Living in smaller communities such as Powell River often means extra worries for unpaid caregivers looking after elderly spouses or parents, according to a senior’s advocate.
A recent report on home and community care released by Office of the Seniors Advocate BC stated the province has the highest reported rate of unpaid caregivers in distress in Canada.
“The issues affecting caregivers are magnified in rural areas,” said Isobel Mackenzie, BC seniors’ advocate, the first to fill that role in Canada. “In Powell River, it’s a ferry ride on either side if you want to access resources in Comox or Vancouver.”
