Mount Saint Joseph Hospital coverage
Representatives of a number of Chinese community groups and NDP MLA Jenny Kwan called on the government to provide funding to upgrade Mount St. Joseph Hospital.
NDP MLA Jenny Kwan said although the government hasn’t said the hospital will be closed, the minister has said there could be some realignment of services, which Kwan said to her means “they’re going to close Mount St. Joseph.” Kwan called on the government not to close down Mount St. Joseph and also to provide funding to upgrade the hospital to meet the needs of patients, especially Chinese patients. Health Minister Terry Lake said there are no plans to close St Joseph's, adding Kwan is trying to make this into a political fight.
Chuck Chang of Chinese Freemason National Headquarter of Canada said the hospital has special meaning to him as his association raised fund for the hospital in 1946.
Dave Lefebvre of Providence Health Care said they will consult the public about the future development of the hospital.
Lefebvre: “Mount St. Joseph is a valued and integral part of the Providence Health Care family of facilities. In fact when we talk about Mount St. Joseph and St. Paul’s, we often refer to them as one program with two sites. So understandably there are people who are concerned but the reality is that we are going to be doing some consultation for the new St. Paul’s and any changes that happen there, there will be some changes that would occur here as well.”
