Type 2 diabetes drastically increasing in youth: B.C. study (Dr. Nadia Khan, St. Paul's Hospital)
Type 2 diabetes, previously considered a disease of older adults, has reached alarming levels in young people, with the highest number of new cases being diagnosed in South Asian youth, suggests a new B.C. study.
Although the researchers didn’t look at the causes of diabetes in youth, senior author Dr. Nadia Khan said rising rates of obesity, high-calorie and high-sugar content diets and sedentary lifestyles are likely the root causes of the surge in cases in youth.
“We could be preventing a lot of this,” Khan told Metro. “It takes years to develop Type 2 diabetes so we need to really prioritize exercise and diet in our households.”
