A Small Device With A Big Impact
“The Pocketalker brings a tremendous amount of comfort to hearing-impaired residents”, says Freya Grumbly, a speech-language pathologist with Providence Health Care. “They can improve resident care through better communication.”
Communication is a crucial ally in a seniors’ care home. Many older adults suffer from hearing loss that creates barriers between care staff and residents in attempts to be heard and understood. “Hearing loss can be very isolating”, says Grumbly. “Residents can lose their drive to initiate conversation and communication becomes limited.”
Liz Chan, a Rehab Assistant at Providence’s St. Vincent’s Langara, agrees. “I use the Pocketalker for group activities like Bingo,” she said. “It allows a resident to be more involved.” Hear, hear!
