Providence Health Care Receives 3M Health Care Quality Team Award
<< BACK | Download Word File Vancouver, October 4, 2005 — A team from Providence Health Care's Laboratory Services has received the 2005 3M Health Care Quality Team Award for Canada in the acute care category. Awarded annually by the Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE), this prominent health care industry accolade acknowledges successful patient-care quality improvement projects that demonstrate high levels of innovation and outstanding teamwork. This is the second year in a row that a team from Providence has received this award. "The award is representative of the kind of positive work being done at Providence to improve access and care for patients throughout our facilities," says Carl Roy, President and CEO of Providence Health Care. "In addition to significant cost savings, the Laboratory Project has produced results that directly translate into enhanced patient care." The Providence lab reduced operating costs by $500,000 a year and has dramatically decreased turnaround times of patient test results. "We used to be still collecting blood samples at ten in the morning. Now about 90 per cent of the morning test results are reported by that time, and we are still working on improvements," says Enid Edwards, Laboratory Medical Director at Providence, who recently presented on the project at a national conference on laboratory innovation. "Faster test results means that patients wait a shorter period of time, which also helps to reduce patient anxiety." Providence Health Care is Canada's largest faith-based health care organization, operating six health care facilities in Vancouver that provide acute, residential and rehabilitation services while conducting innovative medical research. 3M is a diversified international company with a health care business consisting of more than 10,000 medical, surgical, consumer, home health care, dental and pharmaceutical products.
