Vancouver, October 7, 2004 — Patients in Providence Health Care emergency rooms had positive experiences and rated their quality of care highly, according to a recent province-wide patient satisfaction survey.

The Ministry of Health Services today released the results of the survey, which included all emergency, urgent care and diagnostic and treatment facilities in BC and was based on three months of visits during 2003. A total of 103 facilities across the province participated, and nearly 15,000 patients completed questionnaires.

In the patient survey, Emergency Services at both St. Paul's and Mount Saint Joseph hospitals scored above the Canadian, BC and Vancouver Coastal Health averages in ratings of overall quality of care.

More than 87 per cent of Providence patients surveyed gave a positive response when asked about their overall quality of care. A total of 91.5 per cent of patients surveyed would recommend that others visit PHC emergency rooms. More than 80 per cent of patients seen at a Providence ER said they waited an hour or less to see a physician, and most said their visit lasted less than three hours.

"Our Emergency Services staff are at the frontlines of health-care delivery, working under tremendous pressure and performing difficult and demanding work with professionalism and personal caring in keeping with PHC values," said PHC President and CEO Carl Roy. "PHC's patient satisfaction scores are a testament to their excellent skills, abilities and attitudes."

Providence would also like to thank the patients who took the time to voluntarily complete the questionnaire, Roy added. Their experiences will help direct efforts to improve patient care, a commitment reflected in PHC's guiding principle of "How you want to be treated."

The survey points to some areas where there are opportunities for improvement. For example, fewer than 38 per cent of patients said an appointment for follow-up treatment was made before they left the emergency ward, and only 42.5 per cent said the reason for the wait in the ER was explained.
