B.C. OK's coverage for life-saving heart-failure drug after cardiologists' plea (Dr. Mustafa Toma, St. Paul's Hospital)
The B.C. government has approved coverage for an expensive heart-failure drug, after several cardiologists urged the province to fund the life-saving medication.
Sacubitril-valsartan, or brand name Entresto, is now available for heart-failure patients, the government said this week, but only by application from a cardiologist or an internal medicine specialist.
In December, several prominent cardiologists, including Dr. Mustafa Toma, medical director of heart transplant at St. Paul’s Hospital, sent letters to Health Minister Adrian Dix urging affordable coverage of sacubitril-valsartan because it is considered the new standard of care in patients with symptomatic heart failure.
