Anonymous $750,000 donation behind St. Paul's 'HUB' for mental-health and substance-use patients (Dr. Bill MacEwan)
As an overdose and mental-health crisis continues to overwhelm Vancouver’s doctors and first responders, a new service opening this spring is expected to bring some relief.
St. Paul’s Hospital has announced that the “HUB” will open this spring to provide patients with rapid, ongoing care and alleviate continued strain on its emergency department, which sees more than 10,500 patients with mental-health and substance-use issues each year.
“We often are seeing, frankly, just way too many people,” said Dr. Bill MacEwan, head of psychiatry at St. Paul’s. “We’re not able to give people a first-class clinical space, dignity and respect in terms of their privacy.”
