Renal / Kidney
Providence Health Care (PHC) has the most integrated kidney treatment, research and education program in British Columbia, with 13 nephrologists and over 200 staff providing care to patients and families living within the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) region, as well as from across BC and the Yukon. Its integrated, interdisciplinary team of caregivers - based at St. Paul's Hospital - provides a continuum of treatment, from early intervention to dialysis and kidney transplantation.
The range of hospital-based and outreach services provided by the renal team includes medical consultations, pre-dialysis education and orientation to treatment options, in-centre and community hemodialysis, training for home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, and a 21 bed Nephrology/Urology inpatients unit with 6 short stay beds. In addition, patients are assessed for transplantation and are followed post-transplant through the transplant clinic. About 90 kidney transplants are performed each year at St. Paul's.
With chronic kidney disease increasing in BC by 10 per cent every year, Providence Health Care continues to plan, expand and integrate services. The Hemodialysis Unit at St. Paul's is the largest in-centre unit in BC. The Hemodialysis Unit also provides plasmapharesis treatments for PHC. Aside from the St. Paul's-based services, PHC has operational responsibility for six community dialysis units in the VCH region: Vancouver, Squamish, Sechelt, Powell River, Richmond and North Vancouver.
