Mental Health

Providence Health Care provides inpatient and outpatient mental health services to adults and seniors. General Psychiatry is the largest service within the Mental Health Program, providing care through community, outpatient, inpatient and consultation services. Services include extensive consultation to patients of St. Paul's Hospital, including medical and nursing consults to patients in Palliative Care, Intensive Care, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, HIV/AIDS and those with diabetes.

The program's scope includes:

Eating Disorders - BC's provincial program for the treatment of adults with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related eating disorders. The program provides clinical services, education, research, outreach and activities supporting a network of services for adults across the province.

Chronic Pain Management - offers assessment and treatment to chronic pain patients through consultation service to in-hospital patients at St. Paul's Hospital, and Chronic Pain Day Hospital service, also available at St. Paul's.

Reproductive Psychiatry - in collaboration with BC Women's Hospital, the service provides care for patients who experience psychological problems related to reproductive events, including pre-menstrual dysphoria, pregnancy or postpartum psychiatric illness and menopausal mood disorders. Outpatient and consultation services are provided.

Refractory Psychosis -Inpatient beds at St. Paul's serve individuals with treatment-resistant psychosis, usually but not exclusively a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Patients are welcomed from the Lower Mainland and from all over the province. In addition, a thriving outpatient clinic for persons with a challenging psychosis allows these people to be assessed and treated with the necessary expertise while staying out of hospital.

Geriatric Psychiatry - Working closely with community and local care teams, the program is available to older adults with a mental illness requiring short-term assessment and treatment. The Geriatric Psychiatry unit has 16 beds with an additional 4 beds located in the Geriatric Medicine unit at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.
