Emergency Medicine

Emergency Department staff and physicians at St. Paul's and Mount Saint Joseph hospitals are skilled in providing care of the highest standards, and are committed to treating all patients as quickly and effectively as possible.

St. Paul's Emergency Department is one of the busiest in BC, offering care 24 hours a day to the residents of Vancouver's diverse downtown neighbourhoods and workers in the downtown core. More than 50,000 patients pass through its doors each year.

The department is staffed by 20 specialty-trained emergency physicians who are trained to deal with the full spectrum of medical emergencies and treat patients of all ages, including children. The department has a Domestic Violence Response Program for patients who may have been involved in domestic violence, elder abuse or child abuse.

St. Paul's is where emergency residents from the UBC Family Practice program are trained. The department is also known as one of Canada's leading academic emergency departments with a strong research program, which includes pre-hospital care, stroke management, diagnosis and treatment of heart disorders.

Mount Saint Joseph operates a community hospital Emergency open from
8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily. The Emergency Room sees close to 16,000 patients a year, and offers full primary and secondary Emergency services to Vancouver's East Side residents, as well as providing specific multicultural services.
