Kevin Scott - Medical Device Reprocessing Technician
Written by Evan Duxbury
How did you end up where you are now?
I was born and raised in Calgary and moved to Vancouver after the 1988 Calgary Olympics, so I was fortunate enough to see 2 winter games up close. I was working in retail when I moved to Vancouver. I ended up with retail burnout and decided to take the MDRD course through Vancouver Community College and I’ve been working at St Paul’s ever since. I have now been at St. Paul’s for 24 years.
What’s your role at PHC?
I work as the instrument anchor assembling all the orthopedic and implant sets in the Medical Device Reprocessing Department, (formerly Sterile Processing Department) at St Paul’s Hospital where we clean, re-assemble and sterilize all the equipment required for surgical procedures. For 6 months of the year I teach the Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Certification Program for VCC.
Have any mentors been particularly important in your career?
Our Operations Leader, Dianne, has always been an excellent source of advice and always makes sure we’re able to upgrade our skills and knowledge at workshops or seminars when they come up. She has also worked very hard to get what we need including machinery to enable us to contribute to the highest quality of patient care.
If there’s one thing you’d like people to know about your work, what would it be?
MDRD is more than just cleaning. Most people overlook that we’re also responsible for disassembling, cleaning, inspecting, assembling, and sterilizing all of the medical devices. This requires incredible attention to detail and an in-depth understanding of how each device is operated.
What’s the best part of your job?
The culture in the department is all about adhering to the highest standards of patient safety and care, and it’s heartening to work with a group who are all so focused on the patient, even if we never see them. The knowledge that our work contributes to every procedure in the hospital is probably the best part.
If you could change one thing about your job what would it be?
Of course, it would be nice to be paid a little more, but overall, I love my job. My teaching role allows me to be a mentor, and it’s great to see students grow from zero knowledge to becoming big contributors to the team. It’s been very exciting to see some of the changes recently with a few major renovations in the department giving us more space and new equipment. Medical Device Reprocessing is a field that is getting very high tech and changing rapidly, it’s an exciting time to be in this field of work.
What attracted you to Providence Health Care?
There’s something about working at St Paul’s, the atmosphere, the morale. I’m not sure if it’s the focus on patient care, or the spiritual values but I love it here. I’ve been offered supervisory positions at other hospitals which would have been a step up, but I ended up declining them. I’d jump at an opportunity to grow here at St Paul’s, as this feels like home and I can’t see myself leaving.
What’s been the most exciting thing that’s happened to you in the past few months?
The recent open house we had here to show off our new expansion was very exciting. I know for many people, sterile items just “appear,” but we’re proud of the work we do here. It was great to have the opportunity to give people tours of our department and show it off to the rest of the organization.
