Alder Unit is based at St. Vincent Langara Hospital; a tertiary neuropsychiatry program provides a range of specialized services to meet the needs of adults with complex neurological disorders/brain injuries and psychiatric illness, which currently prevents them from living successfully in community settings.
Summary
Reporting to the Operations Leader, the position performs a variety of clerical duties such as assembling and maintaining resident/client charts, greeting and directing residents/clients, booking appointments, drafting routine correspondence, typing a variety of materials, and answering the telephone and relaying messages. Also, processes physicians’ orders, maintains departmental filing systems and policy and procedure manuals, prepares monthly reports, and performs designated staffing functions.Skills
Ability to keyboard at 30 wpm.Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with others effectively.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Ability to organize work.
Ability to operate related equipment.
Knowledge of medical terminology
Education
Grade 12, completion of a recognized Unit Clerk training program plus one year recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Duties
Performs receptionist duties by receiving telephone calls, patients/clients, visitors, and others, answers inquiries or directs to appropriate area or staff.Sets up, maintains, and completes patient/client charts; records information such as weight, temperature, pulse, and respiration, and lab test results in charts or other records as directed; attaches documents such as laboratory and special examination reports to charts after review by professional staff; and completes discharge charts for Health Records according to established procedures.
Processes physician orders utilizing manual and/or computerized software as per established procedures.
Performs clerical duties as required such as typing, record keeping and ordering supplies, entering and retrieving computerized data and patient/client information, and sorting and distributing mail.
Maintains staff records and schedules by performing duties such as receiving or transferring calls from staff regarding illness or absence from work, and contacts Staffing Office as needed according to established guidelines.
Maintains petty cash accounts for the unit and/or resident/client to facilitate the purchasing of goods and services.
Makes arrangements for resident transportation by contacting external representatives such as Handydart and taxi companies.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
