We are seeking casual Recreation Coordinators to work at Providence Health Care’s residential care sites including: Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, St. Vincent’s Langara, Brock Fahrni, and Youville Residence. The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation programs for the residential care department. Reporting to the Resident Care Manager and in cooperation with the members of the multidisciplinary team, plans, implements and evaluates recreation programs for the designated Unit. Supports residents with activities of daily living by encouraging participation in activities such as meal planning and preparation, housekeeping, social, leisure and recreation events; promotes a healthy lifestyle. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for clients and the team. Participates in team meetings, engages in team planning and quality improvement activities, and maintains and updates own knowledge.

Graduation from a recognized therapeutic recreation diploma program plus one year recent, related experience or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Through consultation with residents, members of the interdisciplinary team and family members, determines and implements activities, both in-house and in the community, that meet the recreation and social needs of residents. Maintain related documentation and develop liaisons with community resources to obtain assistance in program planning for residents.

Plan, implement and participate in/facilitate leisure and social activities for the designated Unit supporting individual resident’s care plans. Locates, sets up, organizes and returns required furnishings and equipment for activity projects.

Demonstrate activity and teach related techniques as required. Contacts external agencies for activity leisure resources.

Monitor residents during activities and report observations such as physical and emotional well-being and social behaviour to interdisciplinary team members as required.

Provide direction to volunteers and demonstrate related techniques as required. Work with the Co-ordinator of Volunteers on the scheduling of volunteer work assignments and in the identification of the need of additional volunteers as required with respect to specific activity programs.

Maintain inventory records of recreation equipment, tools and materials and submit recommendations for purchase to the Resident Care Manager.

Cleans related recreation equipment and ensures proper working order. Maintains recreation equipment in accordance with established practice. Notifies designated leader of supply needs and malfunctioning recreation equipment requiring service.

Participate with rehabilitation and direct care staff in the planning and implementing of joint resident recreation activities.

Participate in the Program Improvement activities by providing input into the development of standards and procedures, conducting audits and reporting outcomes with recommendations for change as required.
