Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Transcription, transcribes and edits medical dictation files such as consultations or other health services related documents. Distributes reports to care providers and paper/electronic health records. Responds to inquiries regarding status of transcriptions and monitors condition of equipment.

Skills

Ability to type at 60 wpm.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with others effectively.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Ability to operate related equipment.

Education

Grade 12, graduation from an approved program in medical transcription plus one years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Duties

Transcribes voice files or edits voice recognition data files from a variety of dictations to create health record documentation such as consultations, discharge summaries, operative reports, progress notes or other health services related documents. This may include the use of report templates and/or the entry of structured text into the electronic health record.

Edits transcribed materials for style, consistency and accuracy of content by identifying medical and verbal inconsistencies in dictation and correcting/resolving by querying supervisor and/or physician as required. Ensures format, punctuation and grammar are correct by proofreading and revising document as required and in accordance with departmental standards. Forwards completed documents to various distribution channels as per established department protocols.

Responds to inquiries related to work status by methods such as checking transcription system for document status and providing information regarding originating date, time completed/time to be completed in accordance with departmental standards.

Participates in quality assurance by performing duties such as reviewing documentation, participation in educational sessions, identifying problems and/or inconsistencies with the information systems or report production procedures and providing feedback and recommendations to the department leadership.

Monitors condition of equipment and reports malfunctions to the supervisor or system administrator.

May assist supervisor by answering phone or walk-in inquiries of customers.

May assist with quality review or interpretation of dictations for peer transcriptionists.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
