PHC EMPLOYED STUDENT NURSE (ESN) PROGRAM
About the Program
Providence Health Care’s Employed Student Nurse (ESN) program provides an opportunity for RN students to continue their professional development and become part of a committed interdisciplinary team. This paid employment experience allows students to consolidate the knowledge and skills learned in school while gaining increased exposure to the clinical setting. Although the focus is on consolidation, as an ESN you will also learn through hands on experience.
ESN’s are considered supernumerary when working on the unit and are hired as casual employees. This allows for flexibility when scheduling shifts around school schedules. You can also apply your earned seniority towards your first job with us! Numerous positions are available at Mount St. Joseph Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital in many exciting areas. These areas include Acute Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Cardiac, Renal, Critical Care and Maternity.
In addition to the area clinical support, two dedicated ESN educators provide orientation and support during your ESN experience and continue to provide support to you as a New Graduate with Providence Health Care. Job readiness will be enhanced through your ESN experience while the continued support from the nurse educators help ease the transition from student to qualified nurse.
How Do I Qualify?
In order to qualify for an ESN position you must have:
• Successfully completed the equivalent of 2nd year in a recognized nursing education program.
• Maintain enrolment in the equivalent 3rd or 4th year of the program.
• Current student membership with CRNBC.
• Current CPR Certification.
How Do I Apply?
In mid October, the PHC ESN Application process will open and will be available online until the end of November.

• Create an account through PHC’s Career page by creating a profile and uploading your completed ESN application form where it asks you to upload your resume.

YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE REVIEWED IN DECEMBER AND IF SELECTED FOR AN INTERVIEW, YOU WILL BE CONTACTED IN JANUARY.
You must be available to attend one full week of Nursing Orientation before you can begin working as an ESN.

PHC NEW GRADUATE (NG) PROGRAM
Interested in joining the New Grad Program at PHC? Here is some information on how to become involved, what the program offers and who you can contact for more information.
How Do I Join The New Grad Program?
Once you have gained employment with PHC you will automatically be part of the program. You do not need to apply to the New Grad Program in order to join. Whether you are an RN, LPN or RPN hired in either a casual, part time or full time position you are part of the program.
Once you are hired, your operations leader/manager will schedule you for New Graduate Nurse orientation where you can meet the educators of the program and find out more. You are officially part of the program for one year but the educators are usually always around!
What Does The New Grad Program Offer?
The program is made up of three different components: Added Support, Education and Consultation.
It is becoming widely known that the transition from a student nurse to a fully qualified nurse can be difficult at times. The New Graduate Program at PHC provides a new graduate specific orientation in order to familiarize you with the program and helps to prepare you to start your new career.
Orientation consists of two weeks classroom education, unit specific orientation and guided bedside shifts. The number of guided bedside shifts depends on the unit you will be working on and your previous work experience. The new graduate educators will work with you to ensure you have enough support.
On the unit you will see the New Grad Educators as they check-in with you, see how your day is going and if any clinical help with problem solving is needed. In addition, you will have the support of your Operations Leaders, unit Educators, Clinical Resources Nurses (Mentors), Clinical Nurse Leaders and your colleagues.
The Program provides four educational workshops. These workshops are engaging, interactive and relevant to new graduate learning needs. Topics covered include, interpreting lab results, responding to emergencies, diagnostic tests & procedures and providing care at the end of life.
3 Month Seminar
The first three months can sometimes be the most difficult. Extra support and education is provided at this time and brings new graduates together to talk and share their experiences.
One to One Support
If you require specific education, the educators can meet with you individually, discuss your learning needs and provide extra education, skills lab practice and other resources.
RN Exam Tutorials
In order to help you study for the CRNE exam the program provides the opportunity for you to attend free tutorial sessions.

• Goal setting
• One to one support in your transition from student to qualified nurse

Providence Health Care Perioperative Nursing Program
This is a course for Registered Nurses (RNs) who want to specialize in perioperative nursing. It is offered as a combination of distance education, classroom sessions and clinical practice. All surgical specialties are covered such as general surgery, gynecology, plastics, urology, vascular and thoracic, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and ear nose and throat (ENT).
The Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) has approved this program. Upon successful completion of the Program, graduates are awarded a Diploma in Perioperative Nursing and receive credits toward a baccalaureate degree.
