SPECIALTY AREAS

St. Paul's Hospital is recognized provincially, nationally and internationally for a number of specialty programs and services. Some are offered nowhere else in BC.

As a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of British Columbia, basic health research at St. Paul's has a cardiovascular, pulmonary & critical care focus — complementing a number of the priority clinical service areas. St. Paul's is designated the provincial Heart Centre, offering services ranging from prevention and rehabilitation to heart transplantation.

St. Paul's is also a leader in renal care services, managing a number of dialysis units (within the hospital and in six community clinics), an early intervention kidney clinic and providing kidney transplant surgery.

St. Paul's was the first hospital in BC to serve those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s, and remains committed to caring for this population through both research and treatment. In addition to a designated HIV/AIDS ward, the hospital is home to the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and the National HIV/AIDS Clinical Trials Network.

Within the hospital's extensive mental health portfolio, the Eating Disorders program provides hope to individuals across BC suffering from anorexia, bulimia and related conditions.

Also part of the Mental Health Program, the Pain Centre at St. Paul’s Hospital serves as a pain treatment and management resource for patients throughout British Columbia and the Yukon.

St. Paul's is also know for its diabetes treatment centre and other specialty programs such as cochlear implantation.

St. Paul's provides comprehensive diagnostic services, including CT scanning, MRI, ultrasound and nuclear medicine. The laboratory at St. Paul's offers a wide range of high-quality, patient-centered diagnostic services, ranging from routine diagnostic tests to sophisticated, state-of-the-art assays. Respiratory programs include the Provincial Cystic Fibrosis Program, Asthma and Sleep Disorders clinics.

St. Paul's also plays a critical role in the education of physicians, nurses and other health professionals and is a major health research facility.
