Grand Medical Rounds

Weekly Department of Medicine Grand Rounds offer a range of clinically relevant, educational topics for a generalized audience of students, residents, fellows and faculty. Grand Rounds are an accredited group learning activity for the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Grand Rounds are held on Thursdays at noon in the Cullen Family Lecture Theatre, Level 1, St. Paul's Hospital. They are also broadcast live to various locations around the province.

"Should I accept this gift? Transplantation from donors at increased risk for infectious disease transmission"

Background: The fentanyl crisis has dramatically increased the potential number of deceased organ donors, but many of these donors are at high risk for transmitting HIV and Hepatitis

Learning Objectives:
1. Assess the risks and benefits of using organs from high risk donors for transplantation in Canada

2. Advise wait-list patients regarding the acceptance of a transplant from a high infectious risk donor

3. Understand new strategies to increase transplantation from high risk donors
