Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine where the digestive system and its disorders are studied.
The Gastroenterology Division at St. Paul's hospital is composed of ten gastroenterologists. These include Dr. Lawrence Halparin (Division Head), Dr. Jack Amar, Dr. Scott Whittaker, Dr. Rob Enns, Dr. Jennifer Telford, Dr. Eric Lam, Dr. Alnoor Ramji, Dr. Brian Bressler, Dr. Joanna Law, and the newest member, Dr. Hin Hin Ko. The Division has a strong clinical base, is involved in clinical research, and plays a role in undergraduate, post-graduate, and fellowship training. Division members are active provincially and nationally.

The Gastroenterology Division is actively involved in continuing medical education. This includes undergraduate teaching at the second, third and fourth-year levels, post-graduate teaching of Internal Medicine residents, with twenty four rotating through the service on a yearly basis and gastrointestinal fellowship training, there being three fellows involved in the program. The Division remains actively involved in continuing medical education, and Dr. Ramji and Dr. Lam are members of the Post-Graduate Fellowship Training Committee. Dr. Ramji is chair of the annual St. Paul's postgraduate course for family physicians.
Research in the Division of Gastroenterology includes both investigator and industry-sponsored studies. The Endoscopy Unit has expanded to 7,000 cases per year, with the new technology of endoscopic ultrasound already added to our diagnostic and therapeutic armamentarium. Dr. Eric Lam and Dr. Jennifer Telford have established the Endoscopy Ultrasound Unit and are actively involved in clinical research projects in this field. Dr. Enns continues to be a leader in the field of capsule endoscopy of the small bowel.
The Division members are actively involved professionally and in research. Dr. Enns is the Head of the Division of Gastroenterology Research at St. Paul's Hospital, Head of the Endoscopy Committee for Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, and a member of the Canadian Digestive Disease Health Foundation Committee. He has significant clinical research interests, extending from obscure gastrointestinal bleeding to inflammatory bowel disease, and remains involved in several multi-centre clinical trials in inflammatory bowel disease and reflux. His grants come from the Canadian Society of Intestinal Disease, as well as many industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Dr. Whittaker remains Chairperson of the provincial Home and Hospital TPN Program, Chairperson of the BCMA Nutrition Committee, and a member of the editorial board of Gastroenterology Canada. Dr. Jennifer Telford is the Director of Colon Cancer Check, the provincial screening program for Colon cancer organized through the B.C. Cancer Agency. In addition, Dr. Telford is involved in research in colorectal cancer screening, as well as in endoscopic biliary stenting. Dr. Lam continues to carry out research in endoscopic ultrasound. Dr. Bressler is involved in clinical research trials in inflammatory bowel disease.
