Critical Care Medicine

Critical Care Medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the provision of life support or organ support systems in patients who are critically ill and who usually require intensive monitoring.

The Division of Critical Care Medicine consists of eleven members who are actively involved in providing patient care services in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital and Mount St. Joseph's Hospital.

Teaching
All members of the Division are involved in providing clinical teaching at all levels. The ICU rotations for specialty residents from Medicine, Anesthesia and Surgery are highly rated at St. Paul's Hospital.

Research
The research program in Critical Care Medicine is comprehensive, spanning from molecular and cellular biology through large animal models to clinical research in critically ill adults. The basic science research program is based in the Cardiopulmonary Laboratories at St. Paul's Hospital. The clinical research program is focused in the intensive care unit at St. Paul's Hospital.
